Pull-string spinning top with beech wood base
The pull string is located in the base.
Approx. 70 x 135 mm
Inspired by
Sophie Taeuber-Arp's marionette “Dr. Komplex.”
The works of artist Sophie Taueber Arp (1889-1943) consist of geometric
basic shapes (cones, cylinders, and spheres...) and were part of the avant-garde of modernism during the Bauhaus
period. She was an artist of the DADA movement.
The exhibition “Let the Puppets Dance” was the inspiration for this creation. With the help of a woodturner, 17 marionettes (with stage decorations) were created on commission for the Zurich Puppet Theater. The aim was to adapt Carlo Goezzi's play The King Stag.
This spinning top is intended for play. Just as a marionette needs to move in a puppet theater, this spinning top needs movement, but it is also designed as a decoration. As an object, it should arouse interest without its status as a spinning top being recognizable. That is why the pull string in the base is slightly hidden.
Let the spinning top play, hum, dance... in memory of this wonderful artist.
